Beethoven napisał do tej opery aż cztery uwertury. Pierwsze trzy (znane pod nazwą Leonora, podobnie jak pierwsze dwie wersje samej opery) powstawały w latach 1804-1806. Ostatnia (już jako Fidelio) została napisana w 1814 roku. Pierwsze wykonanie opery w 1805 roku w Theater an der Wien w Wiedniu.

I am having a personal Fidelio festival this week, watching the three versions I own: yesterday, that directed by Bernstein ca. 1978. Fidelio Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) Fidelio is Beethoven's enige opera. Het is een ontroerend, serieus werk vol prachtige momenten over onzelfzuchtige liefde, trouw, moed en opoffering. Het is het verhaal van Leonore die zich vermomd heeft om haar man te zoeken, de vrijheidsstrijder Florestan.
