Arcanobacterium haemolyticum sensitivity

Named initially as Corynebacterium hemolyticum, it was first reported from the cultures of throat and skin samples in 1946. 1 The spectrum of diseases includes pharyngitis, cellulitis and skin infections. This organism has also been implicated in sepsis, 2 orbital cellulitis 2017-04-24 It was classified as part of the genus Arcanobacterium 1 and was later reclassified as part of the genus Trueperella 4. There are some documented cases of infection caused by Trueperella bernardiae. These bacteria usually come from the skin as it can be part of the regular skin flora 5.

It is essentially an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients and may be responsible for infections of the skin and pharynx in healthy subjects, especially in children and adolescents. All the three isolates of Arcanobacterium haemolyticum isolated by us were uniformly resistant to cotrimoxazole and sensitive to penicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin.
